A voir ou à revoir, cette excellente interprétation de Nothing, tirée de A Chorus Line, par son interprète originale, Priscilla Lopez. La performance est extraite de la très inégale soirée My Favorite Broadway – The Leading Ladies, en 1999.

Je connaissais déjà quelques unes des anecdotes ou des opinions retranscrites. En dehors de cela, j'aime beaucoup la première anecdote sur Ethel Merman et la "swearing jar".
On apprend également que Sondheim apprécie la traduction en espagnol des paroles de West Side Story. Il réaffirme que le Bobby de Company est bien hétéro, contrairement à ce qu'ont pu supposer certains exégètes. Il critique South Pacific, et notamment les paroles de There's nothing like a dame, précisant qu'Oscar Hammerstein est meilleur dans le registre romantique. Sur ce dernier point, il n'a pas tort.
A noter aussi, la citation d'Elaine Stritch s'adressant à un barman "Donnez-moi une bouteille de vodka et un plan du sol.".
Oui, c’est bien ce que vous pensez.
Je ne suis pas certain que la notion de faire entrer les clowns après un numéro de vaudeville raté soit transposable en France. Et quand bien même, je ne suis pas certain que cette traduction soit à la hauteur. Quant à l’interprétation parlée-chantée, bof bof bof. Faut-il en rire, indeed.

Un spectateur prenait trop de photos pendant son Rose's Turn, Patti, furibarde, a donc arrêté de chanter et a exigé que l'on fasse immédiatement sortir l'impétrant. Vous pouvez entendre l'incident ici. Prendre des photos dans un théâtre est "un manque de respect", selon elle. Elle serait donc ravie de connaître l'existence de cet enregistrement. D'autant qu'elle n'y est pas tellement à son avantage. Désolé Patti, mais c'est trop bon!
Le nouvel album d’Antony – and the Johnsons sort dans quelques jours. C’est donc le moment idéal pour (re)découvrir son premier album. Moins réussi que le génial I am a bird now, il contient malgré tout de superbes chansons. A l’image de ce Hitler in my heart:
Il n’y a vraiment qu’Antony pour mettre Hitler dans un titre de chanson… Qui plus est pour l’associer au mot « heart ». Et le reste des paroles est dans le plus pur style du chanteur, avec notamment cette phrase:
« Don’t punish me / for wanting your love inside of me ».
Dommage en revanche qu’on ait droit à un très paresseux « la la la » en début de chanson. Le reste de la chanson est impeccable.
Mieux vaut tard que jamais. Six ans après sa création, j'ai enfin assisté à l'hommage d'Isabelle Georges à Judy Garland, intitulé Une étoile et moi (Judy and me, en anglais). Avec l'aide de Frederik Steenbrink, Isabelle déroule la vie de Frances Gumm, alias Judy Garland, en émaillant le parcours de chansons. C'est simple, touchant, émouvant. Une grande réussite, susceptible de plaire même aux non-initiés.
A tel point, d'ailleurs, qu'on aurait préféré voir Isabelle Georges sur scène à l'Olympia, le soir où Rufus Wainwright est venu défendre son projet Carnegie Hall (tout en étant malade), ne serait-ce que pour la Trolley Song.
Vous pouvez lire l'interview d'Isabelle sur Yagg (réalisée par mes soins). Et/ou vous précipiter à la Péniche-Opéra, près de Stalingrad. C'est jusqu'à la fin de l'année.
Ceux qui ont déjà versé quelques larmes devant le film Beautiful Thing seront ravis d'apprendre que la pièce (dont le film était tiré) débarque à Paris début janvier, au Vingtième Théâtre.
Yagg a filmé les répétitions. Can't wait.
Même Gypsy, victime de la crise, doit fermer ses portes plus tôt que prévu. Comme l'indique le New York Times, le revival de la comédie musicale légendaire vient s'ajouter à la longue liste des shows qui s'arrêtent en janvier, dont Young Frankenstein, Hairspray, Grease,Spamalot et Spring Awakening. Salauds de capitalistes.
J’étais passé à côté du nouvel album de Grace Jones, Hurricane. Le côté « vieille gloire du Palace » ayant un effet relativement repoussoir sur ma personne. Et je pensais qu’il s’agissait plus ou moins d’un album à la Amanda Lear.
Et puis, on m’a fait écouter l’excellent William’s Blood. Décidément, il n’y a que les idiotes qui ne changent pas d’avis.
Je connaissais la chanson, mais je ne savais pas du tout de qui elle était. Et puis, je l’ai réentendue dans Clara Sheller – c’était la « chanson triste ». Et grâce aux crédits du générique, j’ai pu l’identifier. C’est une chanson de Brian Eno. Elle figure sur son album Before and after science.
Si vous voulez voir Djamel Méhane en boxer et accessoirement le premier épisode d'un petit reportage très bien fichu et très drôle sur Grease, qui se joue actuellement au Comedia, c'est sur Yagg que ça se passe. Et non, ce n'est pas moi qui l'ai réalisé, c'est le duo des Christophe, Martet et Mirambeau.
